France

France's government is under fire after police took a girl from a school field trip and expelled her and her family to their native Kosovo.
Immigrants' rights groups and even members of the governing Socialist Party are calling the conditions of the expulsion shocking. Such expulsions are a sensitive subject, as European governments champion human rights but grapple with the costs of taking in migrants.
The Interior Ministry said Wednesday that the family's application for asylum had been rejected, so they no longer had the right to stay in France but repeatedly refused to leave. It said police detained the eight members of the family and expelled them to Kosovo on Oct. 8 and 9, including one adolescent daughter escorted by police off a school bus after a field trip.
